Are AI-Generated Product Photos Allowed on Etsy, Amazon, Shopify and TikTok Shop?
Updated 5 September 2026
Short answer
Yes, with conditions that differ by platform. Etsy allows AI-created items and images but requires sellers to disclose AI use in the listing description. Shopify imposes no restriction and offers AI image generation in its own product tools. Amazon permits AI-generated imagery generally, and — according to press reports of a July 2026 seller notice — now requires a metadata label on images that contain photorealistic AI-generated people. For TikTok Shop we could not find an official policy on AI-generated product images, so we do not state one.
How should you read platform rules about AI images?
Carefully, and with a source. Most articles on this topic repeat each other, and several confidently state rules that no platform has published. This guide grades every claim: stated as a rule only where the platform's own page says it and is linked below; described as a report where we could only find it in the press; and left out where we found nothing official. An honest gap is more useful than a confident guess, because the penalty for getting this wrong is a suppressed listing.
One distinction runs through all of it: an AI-generated scene around your real product is treated very differently from an AI-generated product, and differently again from an AI-generated person. Restaging a genuine product photo into a new background is the least sensitive case on every platform we looked at.
What does Etsy allow?
Etsy's Creativity Standards explicitly permit creations "generated using AI tools … based on a seller's original prompts" under its "designed by a seller" category, and set one clear condition: "Sellers must disclose within their listing description if an item is created with the use of AI." The standards also list "AI prompt bundles" as something that does not qualify as designed by a seller.
For product photography the practical reading is: you may use AI-generated scenes and imagery for your listings, and you should say so in the description. The disclosure requirement is written around the item itself, so if only your photos are AI-assisted, a short line noting it is the safe course.
- AI-generated imagery
- Allowed ("designed by a seller" — Etsy Creativity Standards).
- Disclosure
- Required in the listing description when an item is created with AI (verified, official).
- Prohibited
- Selling AI prompt bundles as designed-by-seller items (verified, official).
What does Shopify allow?
We found no restriction on AI-generated product images in Shopify's policies, and Shopify itself ships AI image tools for product media inside the admin (Shopify Magic). Shopify's published limits concern file size and dimensions — up to 5000 × 5000 px and under 20 MB per image — not how the image was made. Your own store, your own rules; the constraints that do apply come from advertising platforms and consumer law rather than from Shopify.
What does Amazon require?
Amazon's product image requirements are documented in Seller Central behind a login, so we link to them rather than quote them. AI-generated imagery is not prohibited in itself; the main-image rules (plain white background, product filling most of the frame) apply regardless of how the image was produced.
The change to know about is more specific. According to reports in eWeek and Forbes of a seller notice dated 23 July 2026, Amazon now requires sellers to embed the metadata keyword "contains-synthetic-performer" in listing images and A+ content that show photorealistic, entirely AI-generated people, and will display a disclosure on the listing. The reporting ties the change to New York's General Business Law §396-b on synthetic performers in advertising. We could not locate a public Amazon page stating the rule, so treat the details as reported rather than verified, and check the notice in your own Seller Central account.
- AI-generated scenes around a real product
- Not restricted by the reported rule — it covers AI-generated people.
- Photorealistic AI-generated people
- Reported: metadata label "contains-synthetic-performer" required (eWeek / Forbes, July 2026; no public Amazon page found).
- Real people, edited with AI
- Reported as outside the labelling rule.
- Main image
- Existing requirements (white background etc.) unchanged — see Seller Central.
What about TikTok Shop?
We could not find an official TikTok Shop policy page that addresses AI-generated product images specifically. Third-party guides describe a visible "AI-generated" label requirement, but without a platform source we will not state it as a rule. If you sell on TikTok Shop, check the current seller policies in Seller Center and, if in doubt, disclose — a disclosure that turns out to be unnecessary costs nothing.
What is the safe practice across all platforms?
Use a real photo of your real product as the input, and generate the scene around it rather than the product itself — the product a buyer receives must match the image. Disclose AI use where a platform asks for it (Etsy) and consider a short disclosure where policy is unclear. Be especially careful with AI-generated people: that is where new rules are appearing, and it is also where a mismatch with reality is most likely to be read as deceptive.
Questions
Do I have to say my product photos are AI-generated on Etsy?
Etsy requires disclosure in the listing description when an item is created with AI. If your photos — not the item — are AI-assisted, adding a short note is the safe reading of that rule.
Will Amazon reject AI-generated lifestyle images?
AI-generated imagery is not prohibited. The specific reported requirement concerns photorealistic AI-generated people, which need a metadata label. Scenes generated around your real product are not covered by that rule as reported.
Does Shopify restrict AI product images?
We found no such restriction, and Shopify offers AI image generation in its own product tools. Its published limits are technical: image dimensions and file size.
What is the safest way to use AI for product photos?
Photograph your real product and generate only the setting around it, so what the buyer receives matches the image exactly. Disclose where required and avoid AI-generated people unless you are prepared to label them.
