Product Photos for Shopify Stores
Shopify themes show your products twice: as a small square in the collection grid and as a large image on the product page. These templates are composed to work in both — a clean hero that survives the thumbnail, and lifestyle scenes that carry the product page.

Product imagery that works on Shopify stores
The collection grid is where most Shopify products are first seen, and it is unforgiving: every image is reduced to the same square, sits next to its neighbours, and has to communicate the product before the shopper has read a word. A hero shot with the product large in the frame, on a calm background, in consistent light across the whole catalogue is what makes a grid look like a brand rather than a marketplace. Shopify's own guidance recommends 2048 × 2048 for square product images, and accepts files up to 5000 × 5000 px and 20 MB.
The product page is the opposite problem. The shopper is already interested; now they need to be convinced. That is where lifestyle scenes, scale shots and detail crops earn their place — Shopify does not publish a practical cap on media per product, so the number of images is a design decision, not a constraint. Six to eight distinct images, in the order hero → scale → lifestyle → detail, covers what most buyers ask.
Because every image starts from the same photograph of your product, the catalogue stays consistent as it grows: the same lighting logic, the same colour rendering, the same framing rules, whether you have twelve products or twelve hundred. That consistency is most of what shoppers read as "professional".
What to watch
- 01
Design the hero for the grid, not the page
It will be seen at 300 px before it is ever seen large. Product filling most of the frame, plain background, no text.
- 02
Keep one background family across the catalogue
Collection grids look chaotic when every product sits in a different world. Pick one studio look for heroes and vary only the lifestyle images.
- 03
Use the same image set per product
Hero, scale, lifestyle, detail — in the same order on every product page. Shoppers learn the pattern and find what they need faster.
Questions
- What image size should I use for Shopify product photos?
- Shopify recommends 2048 × 2048 px for square product images and accepts images up to 5000 × 5000 px (25 megapixels) under 20 MB. Square is the safe default because collection grids crop to it.
- How many product images should a Shopify product have?
- Six to eight distinct images cover most products: a hero, one or two angles, a scale shot, a detail crop and one or two lifestyle scenes. Shopify does not publish a practical limit on media per product.
- Can I generate Shopify product photos from one photo?
- Yes. Photograph the product once on a plain background; templates restage it into studio, lifestyle and scale shots while keeping the product itself — label, colour, shape — as photographed.
- Does Shopify allow AI-generated product images?
- We found no restriction in Shopify's policies, and Shopify offers AI image tools inside its own product editor. Its published limits are technical (dimensions and file size), not about how the image was made.

How Many Product Images Does a Listing Need — and Which Ones?
Plan for six to eight images per product: a clean hero shot, two or three additional angles, one image that shows scale (on-model or in-hand), one close-up of material or texture, and one or two lifestyle scenes that show the product in use. Etsy allows up to 10 photos per listing and Shopify publishes no practical cap, so the limit is rarely the platform — it is whether each image answers a question the buyer would otherwise have to ask.
- Policies & decisions
Are AI-Generated Product Photos Allowed on Etsy, Amazon, Shopify and TikTok Shop?
Yes, with conditions that differ by platform. Etsy allows AI-created items and images but requires sellers to disclose AI use in the listing description. Shopify imposes no restriction and offers AI image generation in its own product tools. Amazon permits AI-generated imagery generally, and — according to press reports of a July 2026 seller notice — now requires a metadata label on images that contain photorealistic AI-generated people. For TikTok Shop we could not find an official policy on AI-generated product images, so we do not state one.

Skincare Product Photography: How to Shoot Bottles, Jars and Droppers That Sell
Good skincare photography solves three problems: reflective glass and metallic labels that blow out under hard light, droppers and pumps that cast messy shadows, and creams that photograph grey. Use a broad, soft light source for glossy packaging and a harder directional light for matte or frosted bottles, keep the background simple so it does not read through the glass, and always include one texture shot — a swatch, smear or dispensed drop — because it communicates the product better than any sealed container.
