Etsy's own guidance is simple to state and easy to miss: at least 2000 px on the shortest side, a first photo that is landscape or square, and files under 1 MB so uploads finish on slow connections. The catch is the thumbnail. Search results crop every listing to 4:3, so a product placed near the top or bottom of a tall photo gets cut off exactly where buyers first see it.

Etsy's photo requirements, in plain terms

Size: 2000 px or more on the shortest side. Etsy's example is 3000 × 2250 px, which is 4:3 — the same ratio it uses for search thumbnails. Photos below 635 px on either side are ranked lower.

Formats: JPG, PNG, GIF (not animated), HEIC and SVG. Transparent PNGs are not supported and render with a black background, so flatten them to white first.

File size: Etsy warns that images over 1 MB may not finish uploading. Ten photos per listing are allowed and at least five are recommended, plus one video of 5–15 seconds.

Why padding to 4:3 beats cropping to 4:3

Cropping throws away part of the photo; padding keeps all of it and adds canvas on the short sides. A padded 4:3 photo shows the whole product in the thumbnail, then in the listing's full view the extra canvas simply reads as generous white space. If you sell items photographed on a coloured backdrop, set the pad colour to match so the border disappears.

The tool also warns when the first photo is portrait, because Etsy specifically asks for a landscape or square first image.
