Shopify accepts almost any image, which is exactly why product grids end up ragged: one supplier sends 3:4 photos, another sends squares, and the theme sizes each card by its image. Shopify's own recommendation is 2048 × 2048 px squares for product images, with a consistent aspect ratio across a collection.
This tool pads each photo to a square (or any ratio you set), scales it to 2048 px, flattens transparency, and flags anything over 5000 px or 20 MB. WebP and HEIC from suppliers and phones are converted to JPEG locally.
Shopify product images: the numbers
Checked against the sources below on 2026-09-06. Full comparison on the size requirements table.
| Recommended size | 2048 × 2048 px (1:1) |
|---|---|
| Maximum | 5000 px on the longest side |
| Aspect ratio | 1:1 (consistent across a collection) |
| File size | up to 20.00 MB |
| Formats | JPEG or PNG recommended; WebP, GIF, HEIC, TIFF, BMP, SVG accepted |
- Shopify displays square product images best at 2048 × 2048 px; the hard limits are 5000 × 5000 px (25 megapixels) and 20 MB per file.
- Themes size cards by the first image, so a mixed set of ratios makes a collection grid ragged — pad everything to one ratio.
- Shopify serves its own resized copies, so uploading the 2048 master is enough.

Shopify's image limits
Recommended: 2048 × 2048 px for square product images. Maximum: 5000 × 5000 px, or 25 megapixels, and 20 MB per file. Formats: JPEG and PNG are recommended; WebP, GIF, HEIC, TIFF, BMP and SVG are accepted.
Shopify generates its own responsive copies from the master you upload, so there is no benefit to uploading a 6000 px file — it will be rejected — and little benefit beyond 2048 px unless your theme uses very large zoom views.
Consistent ratio is a conversion issue, not a cosmetic one
Themes lay out collection cards from the first image's ratio. Mixed ratios produce uneven rows, misaligned prices and, on mobile, cards that jump as images load. Padding every image to one ratio — square for most stores, 4:5 for fashion — fixes the grid without cropping anything from the photo.
Set the pad colour to your product-page background so the padding is invisible. White is the default; stores with a warm or grey backdrop should match it.
Questions
- Should I upload PNG or JPEG to Shopify?
- JPEG for photographs — it is far smaller at the same visual quality. Use PNG only for graphics that need transparency or hard edges, such as logos and size charts.
- Does Shopify compress my images?
- Yes, Shopify's CDN serves resized and compressed variants automatically. Upload a clean 2048 px JPEG at quality 85–92 and let Shopify handle the rest.
- Can I resize to 4:5 or 3:4 instead of square?
- Yes. The ratio is an option — use whatever your theme's product cards expect, and keep it identical across the collection.
- Are my images uploaded to Glowya?
- No. Processing is done in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
