eBay's picture policy is short: at least 500 px on the longest side (1600 px recommended so buyers can zoom), no borders, text, artwork or watermarks, and a photo of the actual item rather than a stock placeholder. Files can be up to 12 MB and most formats are accepted, but JPEG is what eBay recommends and what its image pipeline handles best.
This tool checks those numbers for each photo, converts HEIC and WebP to JPEG, scales oversize files to 1600 px and keeps everything under 12 MB — without uploading anything.
eBay listing photos: the numbers
Checked against the sources below on 2026-09-06. Full comparison on the size requirements table.
| Recommended size | 1600 × 1600 px |
|---|---|
| Minimum | 500 px on the longest side (1600 px+ recommended) |
| File size | up to 12.00 MB |
| Formats | JPEG recommended; PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, WebP, HEIC, AVIF accepted |
| Main image content | No text, logos, watermarks, borders or props |
- eBay rejects photos under 500 px on the longest side and recommends 1600 px so buyers can zoom.
- No borders, text, artwork or watermarks on listing photos, and no stock placeholders — the photo must show the actual item.
- Up to 24 photos per listing at no extra cost, so show every angle and any flaw.

eBay's photo rules
Minimum 500 px on the longest side; recommended 1600 × 1600 px. Up to 24 photos per listing at no extra cost. JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, WebP, HEIC and AVIF are accepted; JPEG is recommended.
No borders, added text, artwork, logos or watermarks on listing photos, and no placeholders or catalogue stock images for used items — buyers must see the item they will receive.
What to shoot for used and refurbished items
eBay's advice — and its dispute process — favours photos that show every angle and any flaw. The 24-photo allowance exists for this. Resize the set rather than picking three, and keep the originals: a 1600 px copy is perfect for the listing, but a full-resolution original is your evidence if an item-not-as-described case is opened.
Questions
- Does eBay require a white background?
- No. eBay recommends a plain, uncluttered background but does not mandate pure white the way Amazon does. Consistent lighting matters more.
- Will a 4000 px photo be rejected?
- No, but it is unnecessary: eBay resizes to its own display sizes. 1600 px is the size at which zoom is fully sharp and uploads are quick.
- Can I add a small watermark?
- eBay's current policy does not allow watermarks on listing photos. Protect photos by keeping the originals and uploading the resized copies.
- Are photos uploaded during the check?
- No. Everything runs in your browser.
